My children had been wanting a waffle maker for some time. I gave it some thought and decided to get one. They don’t have a huge load of toys so why not get it. Moreover, my husband is the one who usually makes pancakes and he spends a lot of time at the stove because my kids eat SO MANY! So maybe now the pancake demand will be a little lower.
Choosing a waffle iron wasn’t an easy task because getting a kitchen appliance means I will make myself study everything there is about the topic, but more of that later.
I’m going to get ahead of myself a bit and say that making waffles at home was a great decision. They are so easy to make and so so delicious! (You might like Aunt Jemima Waffles but let me tell you, it’s not more difficult to make the batter from scratch.) The children are happy, therefore, I am happy. I adjusted the batter recipe to have the best waffles ever – they are soft inside and crunchy on the outside. I will shape my recipe, of course, and I’ll also show you the waffle maker I chose.
For 8 waffles:
- 300 ml/10.1 oz milk
- 3 tbsp of melted butter
- 2 eggs
- 220 g/7.8 oz all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp of powder sugar
- 1 tsp (full) of baking powder
- pinch of salt
And if you like any of the following, you can spice it up:
- few drops of vanilla extract
- 1 tsp of grated orange or lemon zest
- 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
Topping, for example:
- powder sugar
- fresh berries
- Homemade Hazelnut Spread
- whipped cream
Waffle Batter Recipe
It couldn’t be more simple – you just need to mix all the ingredients. The best way it so prepare the milk first and whisk in all the ingredients but the flour. Flour is added last in smaller batches. I use the electrical whisk but the batter can be mixed manually as well. The resulting batter will be more dense than pancake batter and you have to make sure there are no lumps.
How to make the waffles
If the waffle maker pans are non-stick, you don’t need to oil them, if they are not non-stick, just put a few drops of oil. The waffle iron should be hot when you pour in the batter. I heat it up on a little more than medium, then pour in the batter, close the maker to press waffle and turn the heat up to maximum. I pour the batter all the way to the edge of the pan but not a drop more or else the waffled would blend.
Be careful when taking out the waffles from a non-stick pan, don’t use anything sharp or iron, you mustn’t scratch the surface. A wooden spatula is ideal.
Topping for the waffles
The waffles will be lightly sweet but you can also dust them with powder sugar, that always looks nice (sugar with cinnamon is also a great combination). I prefer waffles with fruit, berries are a great topping. You can also add some whipped cream.
Homemade marmalade is great, too, and Homemade Hazelnut Spread is delicious and healthy, you can find the recipe here. Actually, you can add anything you feel like having on the waffle.
Waffle Maker Recommendation
A good waffle maker is as important as good batter. I watched various criteria:
Dobrý vaflovač je stejně důležitý jako dobré těsto. Buď vám totiž práci ušetří nebo přidá. Při výběru jsem měla několik kritérií:
- no unnecessary electronics like a display and not too many buttons
- more than 2 waffle pans
- temperature regulation
- price 40 € max for a 4-piece waffle maker. Smaller ones are cheaper but this is enough to find a good one for more pieces
I read so many reviews, I compared, thought that maybe we would be ok with a 2-piece waffle iron….no, we wouldn’t unless I want to spend all morning making waffles. And in the end I chose this Vasip 4-piece waffle maker with just one wheel button! This one is from the German Amazon but there is a waffle maker I know and recommend also on the US Amazon and it’s this one.
I can now say it was an excellent choice! The wheel regulates the temperature so it’s possible to also just heat up a waffle. The waffles are done fast and four pieces at once. The highest temperature will get you crunchy waffles, lower temperature softer ones, in both cases soft inside. The red indicator light shows whether the waffle maker is on, the green one shows whether the pans are heated to the chosen temperature.
Maintenance is easy, just wipe it off with a paper towel..
I am always nervous when it comes to choosing a new appliance but this time I can really recommend this one.
How do you like your waffles? With fruit, chocolate, or even savory?
