Faux Mohawk

I really enjoy making faux mohawk hairstyles because they can be worn to formal events as well as to school, work etc. and they’re actually easy to make. And as you can see in the photos, it doesn’t take very long because a 6-year-old can sit through the process.

To be able to do this hairstyle you have to know how to French braid. I wasn’t able to photograph the steps as I would need an extra pair of hands. However, the internet is full of easy tutorials for French braids.

Supplies:

– hair curlers if your hair isn’t wavy or curly – I have really good experience with these

– bobby pins – these for light hair and these for dark hair

– hair pins (that’s those open ones) – these for light hair and these for dark hair

– comb with tail for separating (you can also separate just with your fingers) – I recommend this comb

– clear small elastic bands – you can get them here

– flower for decoration – here is a package of several colorful flowers

– hair spray for fixation

If your hair isn’t wavy, make it wavy by wearing hair rolls overnight or with a curling iron. No extra big curls needed, look at the first picture, that’s enough after you comb the curls a little.

Separate the hair into 3 equal parts from the front to the back of the neck.

You’ll be working with the part closest to the front first so loosen it and separate a strand just at the front.

Separate the rest of the loose hair into 2 sections and French braid each of them in the direction from the front towards the center of the head. Secure the ends with bobby pins.

Remember the section of hair you left loose at the front? Tease it a bit just at the head and backcomb it. Secure with two crossed bobby pins.

Take the two braids and the teased section and secure them with a clear band into a pony tail.

Split that pony tail into 2 stripes and twist them around each other.

Now, take just a few hairs from the end of the twist, hold them in one hand and with the other hand pull the rest of the hair down towards the head.

When you reach the head the hair will form a messy bun.

Now you need to adjust the bun into a form you like and secure it with hair pins.

Loosen the second section of hair, split it in two and braid in the same way like you did before.

Make the same bun like in the previous step.

Follow the same steps with the last section of hair. In the end you have 3 buns next to each other that create the faux mohawk.

Use more hair pins to fix any part of the hair that’s too loose.

You can fixate the hair with a spray and add a flower or another decoration.
